RAICES is seeking a motivated attorney to work in the Children’s Program in our Corpus Christi, Texas office. This position reports to the Children’s Program Supervising Attorney. 

The Staff Attorney will provide legal services for unaccompanied immigrant juveniles in the Corpus Christi area and surrounding counties in Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) shelters. The Staff Attorney will provide legal representation to children in removal proceedings before the U.S. Executive Office for Immigration Review as well as represent children seeking immigration relief before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Core responsibilities will include screening unaccompanied children for legal relief, direct legal representation, including representation in court, educating unaccompanied immigrant children on the law, and managing legal assistants. 

All RAICES staff participates in data input and reporting, stakeholder relationship building and other duties, and training colleagues and community stakeholders as required. All Children's Program Staff within RAICES are expected to drive or make travel arrangements to and from immigration Courts located in San Antonio, Harlingen, Houston, and Conroe as well as travel to the USCIS office in Houston and the district courts in Nueces and surrounding counties on an as needed basis. RAICES employees are expected to show great sensitivity when working with minors who are victims of various forms of severe violence, including sexual and gender-based violence. 

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees. With legal services, social programs, bond assistance, and an advocacy team focused on changing the narrative around immigration in this country, RAICES is operating on the national front lines of the fight for immigrant rights.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Provides direct representation to unaccompanied immigrant children in immigration and state court proceedings and before the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA); 
  • Represents minors in asylum proceedings before USCIS and in bond proceedings in detained immigration court;
  • Supervises a legal assistant team in conducting legal screenings and providing other required legal services to unaccompanied immigrant children placed in shelters by the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR); 
  • Conducts thorough intakes for clients on various forms of immigration relief including, but not limited to, Asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status; 
  • Pursues an aggressive litigation strategy, preserving every possible argument for appeal;
  • Screens clients for trauma, abuse, and trafficking using a client centered, trauma informed approach, that is respectful of all races, nationalities, political opinions, religious beliefs, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, and reproductive rights
  • Makes client referrals for additional services, as appropriate; 
  • Coordinates for additional client services as necessary with the Litigation Unit, the RAICES Bond Fund, the Social Programs, and the Advocacy Department;
  • Ensures entry of timely, accurate, and detailed case data according to grantor provisions and as required by RAICES;
  • Contributes to grant reporting, as applicable;
  • Represents RAICES in occasional community presentations, outreach, workshops, stakeholder meetings, and/or media interviews; and,
  • Provides pro se assistance to prospective clients;
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities including timekeeping, case management, and other tasks related to program compliance. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school;
  • Bar association admission / membership in good standing; 
  • Bilingual with full fluency in English and Spanish;
  • Ability to travel in the local area and throughout Texas; and,
  • Able to pass a Federal Background Check.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Texas Bar member strongly preferred; other bar licenses and law fellows accepted (law fellows must pass the Texas bar within 12 months of hire date);
  • Demonstrated proficiency in research and writing; 
  • Able to work under pressure and handle a large volume of cases;
  • Experience with Immigration and/or Family Law. Law school experience will be considered;
  • Experience working with children;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Able to work independently and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team;
  • Able to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse client population and community members; and,
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to social justice as evidenced by job and/or volunteer or intern experience and deeply believe that racial equity and social justice are important and continually willing and able to hear, reflect, and act on feedback re: identity and equity with the aim to learn.
