Legal Assistant 

RAICES is currently seeking current RAICES employees and contractors to fill a full-time bilingual Legal Assistant position for our Austin.

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees. With legal services, social programs, bond assistance, and an advocacy team focused on changing the narrative around immigration in this country, RAICES is operating on the national front lines of the fight for immigrant rights.


  • Assists attorneys with their caseload providing direct representation to individuals eligible for immigration relief:
    • Meets with clients and prepares applications for review;
    • Prepares filings for individuals before the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and others;
    • Handles incoming and outgoing mail;
    • Gathers supporting documents and prepares translations;
    • Assumes general administrative responsibilities, including detailed case management and timekeeping;
    • Gathers, tracks and records client data; and,
    • Manages both electronic and paper case files including client case log.
  • Conducts initial interviews (“Legal Screenings”) in accordance with RAICES policy:
    • Screens clients for persecution, trafficking, and torture utilizing trauma-informed approaches to provide services and support to clients;
  • Provides referrals for released clients in accordance with RAICES policy;
  • Assists with Advocacy efforts and community outreach;
  • May Provide Pro Se assistance to prospective clients;
  • May conduct Know Your Rights Presentation using approved material;
  • May travel to detention facilities/shelters and other locations locally and/or statewide, as needed;
  • May provide support to volunteers and interns; and,
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or one year experience in a law office setting or 1 year working with the relevant community or population; 
  • Able to travel within the state of Texas as needed;
  • Bilingual with full fluency in English and Spanish; and
  • Able to pass a federal background check.

  • Able to work independently and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team;
  • Experience in immigration and/or criminal law;
  • Able to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse client population as and community members;
  • Commitment to social justice evidenced by job and/or volunteer/intern experience;
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse, immigrant, low-income, children, and/or vulnerable populations;
  • Ability to thrive in a high-paced work environment, while maintaining procedural and ethical integrity;
  • Ability to identify and work on areas of self improvement; and,
  • Proficient in use of technology including MS Office, Google Apps and Internet research.
