Staff Attorney-Litigation Unit

Texas | Legal | Full-time

RAICES is seeking a Staff Attorney in our Litigation Unit. This role offers the opportunity to work with a creative team of attorneys and advocates on RAICES’s portfolio of litigation in the federal court system across the U.S. Core responsibilities include legal research, drafting of motions and complaints, contributing to the strategy and decision-making on cases, and arguing matters in federal court. The position is located in Texas and reports to the Director of Litigation.

The RAICES Litigation Unit pursues individual and class-wide cases in federal and international courts with the dual goals of protecting the rights of immigrants and creating systemic change. RAICES has been involved in major cases challenging numerous efforts by the former administration to curtail asylum access, and to criminalize and dehumanize immigrants. RAICES also regularly pursues individual cases seeking adequate medical and mental health care for detainees, and challenging the government's failure to respect due process in the immigration system.

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees. With legal services, social programs, bond assistance, and an advocacy team focused on changing the narrative around immigration in this country, RAICES is operating on the national front lines of the fight for immigrant rights.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide legal representation and/or participate in litigation efforts through all phases of litigation, including motions practice, discovery, trial, brief writing, and oral argument;
  • Conduct legal research, draft pleadings and briefs, identify litigation issues and develop legal strategies;
  • Handle a caseload providing representation to individuals and classes in lawsuits in federal court and other proceedings across Texas and the U.S.;
  • Assume general administrative responsibilities, including detailed case management, maintaining all case deadlines, timely communications, supervision of legal assistants, and timekeeping; and
  • Perform other additional duties as needed.

  • Licensed in good standing to practice law;
  • 2-4 years of experience practicing law;

 This position requires completion of National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW), State and FBI Fingerprint-based criminal background checks, as well as compliance with Corporation for National and Community Service regulations.  Note that presence on the National Sex Offender Public Website is a bar to service.  Other criminal history does not necessarily disqualify you for service.  Each will be decided on a case by case basis.
