Director of Media Relations

RAICES seeks to hire an experienced professional to lead our Media Relations team as the Director of Media Relations. The Director of Media Relations works closely with RAICES’ leadership, as well as with members across the organization, to tell the story of the organization to a diverse range of external audiences, establishing RAICES as a primary point of reference for education and analysis on the topics of immigration law, policy and culture in the U.S. and internationally. The Director of Media Relations is a full-time position that reports to the Chief Advocacy Officer and is a remote position in any of the following states: Texas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Washington D.C, or Washington.

Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in planning and implementing successful media strategies; cultivating relationships with senior reporters and editors; pitching and landing narrative-changing stories at the highest levels; and a deep knowledge of the issues that impact immigrant communities. 

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas. We actively advocate for these individuals and do whatever it takes to assist the immigrant community. With legal services, social programs, bond assistance, and an advocacy team focused on changing the narrative around immigration in this country, RAICES is operating on the national frontlines of the fight for immigration rights.

Core Responsibilities:

Media Relations Strategy

  • Contributes to the development and execution of campaigns that broaden awareness of RAICES mission, further our strategic plan, and strengthen our visibility across key audiences;

  • Translates RAICES’ objectives into ground-breaking key moments; oversees the execution of successful public relations strategies that cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-­level external audiences;

  • Plans, organizes, monitors and leads successful media engagements that leverage our direct services and the lived experience of our constituents to advance our established goals and objectives;

  • Cultivates strong institutional relationships with reporters, journalists and publications - online, print and television - to advance our messaging, campaigns and calls to action;

  • Integrates concepts seamlessly with a creative approach; produces copy intended for public consumption and ensure its alignment with our voice, legal expertise and strategy, including, but not limited to: talking points, speeches, presentations, statements, press releases and opinion pieces;

  • Encourages the exchange of the best ideas; works with internal team members, external stakeholders and community members to amplify stories that elevate our message, advance our mission, and align public sentiment with our vision;

  • Identifies new opportunities, challenges and emerging issues we face with a solutions-based approach to internal and external communications;

  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of our media relations methods and procedures; and,

  • Manages relationships with vendors and consultants, as assigned.

Team Development/Management

  • Manages the Media Relations Team remotely in accordance with organizational policies and the highest professional standards;

  • Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality by creating and improving systems that will fulfill these tasks efficiently;

  • Assesses and monitors workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships;

  • Establishes appropriate staffing levels within the Media Relations team and allocate resources accordingly; and,

  • Mentors and develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations or a relevant field or combination of High School Diploma or equivalent and commensurate experience;

  • Bilingual with full fluency in both English and Spanish;

  • 7+ years of experience in a communications / media professional role;

  • Experience supervising a team; 

  • Strong written communication skills; and,

  • Affinity for the mission and vision of RAICES.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing and executing across multiple channels and with diverse audiences;

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive and other common productivity platforms;

  • Experience with WordPress and/or HTML, preferred;

  • Willing to execute day­ to ­day tasks and work independently;

  • Capable leader and manager;

  • Good work ethic and a desire to “get the job done”;

  • Willingness to share own ideas, even amongst senior staff and board members;

  • Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively;

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that may require rapid response; and,

  • Cultural competency, specifically in immigration communities.
