RAICES is seeking a Legal Assistant to join the Litigation Program. This position is based in San Antonio, Texas.

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas.  We actively advocate for these individuals and do whatever it takes to assist the immigrant community.

  •  Provides assistance to and supporting legal representation for families and individuals detained in government custody at locations throughout Texas; 
  • Travels as needed to detention centers to interview clients, prepare declarations, and/or interpret for lawyers;
  • Assists in securing evidence for litigation, managing discovery, and coordinating with experts;
  • Researches filing formalities and keeps docket calendars up to date;
  • Copyedits, proofreads, and revises legal documents and other written correspondence;
  • Assists with general administrative tasks such as filing, copying, organizing papers, etc.;
  • Proofreads and translates documents to and from Spanish and English;
  • Provides support to pro bono attorneys and volunteers on federal and international litigation;
  • Assists with advocacy efforts to achieve RAICES strategic priorities;
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities including timekeeping, case management and other tasks as needed for program compliance;
  • Conducts independent tasks such as legal research, drafting Freedom of Information Act requests, and assists with comments on proposed regulations, among others; and
  • Provides support in other matters at the RAICES office as needed.


  • Possess four year degree or relevant experience;
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (written and verbal) preferred;
  • Litigation experience, particularly in federal court, including familiarity with PACER and CM/ECF, Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, discovery management, and trial preparation; 
  • Demonstrated experience working with immigrant, low-income and/or vulnerable populations;
  • Ability to travel throughout the Central Texas area;
  • Ability to multitask, handle multiple projects, work independently with minimal supervision, and coordinate people and deadlines; and
  • Excellent research and writing skills, organizational skills, and proficiency in the use of technology.

This position may require completion of the National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) check, as well as state criminal background checks.  Presence on the National Sex Offender Public Website is a bar to service. Other criminal history does not necessarily disqualify you from employment.
