The Organization: RAICES, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas seeks to hire a full-time immigration pro-bono program assistant to assist in-house and pro-bono attorneys to manage their caseload in representing individuals pursuing benefits or seeking relief under the Immigration and Nationality Act.

This position is located in Houston, TX.

The Position: The Pro-bono Program Assistant works as part of a team to coordinate and manage cases of clients seeking immigration relief in removal proceedings. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for keeping client’s information updated, confirming completion of documentation and completing files for assignment to legal teams, and/or pro-bono attorneys. This role requires frequent engagement and interaction (both verbal and written) with clients, employees, legal teams, and external service providers.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for case management consisting of direct interaction with clients via phone, email, etc. Track all necessary information and documentation in preparation of case assignment to the legal team.
  • Respond to routine queries from clients (regarding questionnaires, documentation, etc).
  • Coordinate, assemble, print and organize all incoming case start materials in database in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Respond to routine e-mails and/or phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Providing support to RAICES attorneys and pro-bono attorneys in the preparation, and filing, of removal defenses on behalf of clients before the immigration court.
  • Working with clients to gather supporting documents for their pending applications and/or proceedings before the immigration court.
  • Assisting with immigration cases as assigned by attorney;
  • Performing legal and country condition research;
  • Other paralegal duties for clients who are in removal proceedings. May be required to visit client at the detention center. May assist attorney at motions, bond hearings, or other immigration matter.    May travel to USCIS district office on behalf of or with a client or to hand-file an application or           motion.
  • Maintaining updated database and assisting in the preparation of case reports.
  • Managing both electronic and paper case file including client case log;
  • Provide general administrative and secretarial support (e.g., distributing mail, word processing, scheduling meetings, copying, answering telephones, and maintaining department supplies);
  • Perform document translations and simultaneous interpretation when needed;
  • Perform all other duties and activities as needed and/or as directed by supervisor.


Eligible applicants will satisfy each of the following criteria:

  • Fluency (written and verbal) in English and Spanish;
  • Demonstrated experience working with immigrant, low-income and/or vulnerable populations; 
  • Capacity for working both independently and on team projects;Ability to thrive in a high-paced work environment, while maintaining procedural and ethical integrity;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient in use of technology including MS Office, Google Apps, and internet research;
  • Possession of Bachelor's degree or comparable knowledge and work experience.
