National Volunteer Director

 

RAICES is hiring a National Volunteer Director. This position will report to the Chief Development Officer and will work closely with the National Organizing Director and all of RAICES’ program departments to plan, develop and execute an action-driven national network in which supporters feel engaged and empowered as impactful allies. We are looking for a visionary, collaborative leader who can be the creator and driver of a volunteer program that will be launched on a national scale. This position can be based anywhere in the United States and requires a significant ability to travel with extended periods of time spent in Texas.

 

RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas.  We actively advocate for these individuals and do whatever it takes to assist the immigrant community.

 

Founded in 1986, RAICES has grown to be the largest immigration legal services provider in Texas. With offices in Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, RAICES is a frontline organization in the roiling debate about immigration and immigrants in the world. As an organization that combines expertise developed from the daily practice of immigration law with a deep commitment to advocacy, RAICES is unique among immigration organizations. Our advocacy and commitment to change are driven by the clients and families we serve every day as our attorneys and legal assistants provide legal advocacy and representation in an immigration system that breaks apart families and leaves millions without pathways to legal status.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  • Serve as the visionary architect, leader and builder of RAICES’ National Volunteer Program;
  • Build a volunteer model that is engaging, inspiring and develops long-term relationships with stakeholders across the nation;
  • Collaborate extensively with all of the programmatic areas of RAICES to create a program that builds on and incorporates the existing volunteer programs;
  • Assess internal departmental needs and volunteer management capacity;
  • Design a comprehensive affiliation model including:
    • Define national volunteer tasks;
    • Define task skills requirements and vetting needs;
    • Define and implement a model of local volunteer chapters;
  • Create and manage program systems, manuals and agreements including: 
    • Outreach and recruitment system including communication strategies, digital intake and data collection;
    • Trainings and orientations for volunteer roles;
    • Manuals and agreements for volunteers and staff managing volunteers;
    • Management system including IT infrastructure;
    • Volunteer development and appreciation systems;
    • Tracking volunteer KPI;
  • Create and manage a program evaluation system including:
    • Data collection
    • Programmatic impact evaluation 
    • Volunteer feedback systems
  • Hire and supervise the Youth Volunteer Coordinator and other relevant positions as needed;
  • Develop and oversee program budget.



Qualifications:

 

  • 8-10 years of experience managing a large, national volunteer network;
  • 2-3 years staff management experience;
  • A highly organized, collaborative and inspiring leader with excellent communications skills;
  • Deep knowledge of volunteer models and management systems;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of staff and volunteers;
  • Extensive experience managing relationships with a broad spectrum of stakeholders;
  • Commitment to RAICES’ vision and mission;
  • Ability to travel extensively.

Background

 

As the efforts to deter, attack and eliminate immigration to the United States have unfolded over the last year, millions of Americans have responded with an unprecedented outpouring of support for RAICES as one of the organizations on the front lines of the struggle to maintain the promise of America as a place where those fleeing persecution can find refuge and to defend our most sacred national values.  People from across the nation have reached out to RAICES to find a way to connect, become involved and most of all to help. In order to respond to this explosion of support which outstrips the capacity of our existing volunteer program structure, RAICES did an exploratory project and has created an initial plan for a national volunteer program. Some of that plan and initial work is reflected in the following outline, however the individual selected as the National Volunteer Director will have a significant role in building and shaping the program.

 

Build Volunteer Base

  • Understand RAICES needs, volunteer motivations, trends and best practice in peer organizations;
  • Create a vision and strategy for volunteer engagement.

 

Organize Volunteer Base

  • Develop and communicate organization-wide the internal organization structure and leader mandates of the new volunteer program;
  • Develop and implement a volunteer management system including the IT infrastructure;
  • Develop and implement a recruiting application system and plan;
  • Centralize affiliation management of existing volunteers and discuss the adaptation of existing processes to the new system;
  • Create new volunteer outreach campaigns.

 

Create Affiliation Model

  • Define and detail volunteer work, selecting 3-5 key volunteer tasks;
  • Detail volunteer affiliation requirements and vetting process;
  • Adapt the volunteer verification and vetting process into the new structure;
  • Detail key envisioned volunteer journeys;
  • Update the volunteer manual to reflect the new structure and processes;
  • Define and implement a model for volunteer chapters.

 

Volunteer Communication

  • Create an onboarding process and delivery concept;
  • Develop and implement a volunteer communication plan and channels which includes a rapid response system;
  • Create a model and tools for volunteer feedback and appreciation;
  • Create a model and tools for volunteer learning and development.

 

Core Support Capabilities

  • Research possible volunteer management systems;
  • Detail data collection needs on volunteers and program outcomes;
  • Assess resource and capability requirements for the volunteer strategy implementation.
