RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal services agency that promotes justice by providing immigration legal services, education, and advocacy to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas. RAICES’ Family Detention Program coordinates the Karnes Pro Bono Project which provides these services to individuals detained at the Karnes County Residential Center. The Karnes detention center historically detained migrant families who were primarily asylum-seekers, and currently detains single adult women apprehended at the border and within the interior of the United States.

We seek a full time Data Clerk to join the Program in our advocacy services for individuals detained at the detention center. Data Clerks are the backbone of our team; this position is crucial to the functioning of the Program’s work.  For example, data must be accurately entered daily for proper scheduling of the next day’s workload.  

This position is based in San Antonio, Texas.

Program Mission: To empower and defend migrant families and to advocate for the abolition of immigrant detention through education, legal representation, and advocacy.

Program Vision: We, the Family Detention Program team, envision a compassionate and cooperative community that advocates for and alongside migrants to protect human dignity and promote human rights.

Responsibilities: The data clerk’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Be accountable for the overall maintenance and organization of important and confidential client information;
  • Enter sensitive information into multiple databases and calendars;
  • Scan, file, and organize client documents;
  • Transfer data from client documents into computer files or database systems;
  • Create, maintain, and update spreadsheets with large numbers of figures without mistake;
  • Verify data by comparing it to source documents;
  • Update existing data in a timely manner;
  • Retrieve data from the database or electronic files as requested;
  • Assume general administrative responsibilities including grant compliance, timekeeping, training of colleagues, case management and other responsibilities related to program compliance.

Qualifications:  Eligible applicants will satisfy each of the following criteria:

  • Fast typing skills (touch typing strongly preferred);
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Skilled at use of technology including MS Office, Google Apps, general office equipment and internet research;
  • Must be aligned with the program mission and vision;
  • Demonstrates maturity and takes pride and responsibility in their work;
  • Maintains focus and motivation while successfully completing repetitive work;
  • Must be a self-starter who takes initiative to see responsibilities through to completion;
  • Must be a team player who prioritizes collective success and works in solidarity with colleagues and clients;

Terms of employment & Office Expectations:

  • The organization’s office hours are 8:30 - 5:30, Monday-Friday with weekend work as needed. However, staff working in the family detention team will exceed these hours when assigned to Karnes work.  Due to the needs at Karnes, Data Clerks are currently assigned alternating days to assist the team at Karnes remotely from San Antonio. On assigned Karnes days, data clerks will work a partial office shift during the day, then will complete approximately three hours of evening work.  On non-Karnes days, data entry specialists may request to regularly work a 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. schedule in lieu of an 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. schedule.
  • Travel may be required and applicant must possess and use his or her own vehicle and automobile insurance and have a valid drivers’ license;
  • References will be called and reviewed, and past employers may be called.  Current employer may be called with the consent of the applicant;

  • Offer is contingent upon government clearance for admittance to Karnes Detention Facility.

Background Check:

This position may require completion of the National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) check, as well as state criminal background checks.  Presence on the National Sex Offender Public Website is a bar to service. Other criminal history does not necessarily disqualify you from employment.
