Video Producer (Texas)

RAICES is looking for a driven Video Producer to lead our Texas-based pod.

As a leading voice in the fight for immigrant rights, RAICES knows that creative filmmaking and ‘opinionated journalism’ are powerful tools to challenge damaging narratives about immigration and push the public to consider new perspectives. We’re ramping up our video production to continuously inform the public on key issues, push for policy change, generate support for our work, celebrate immigrants, and support impacted communities. Our videos range from snappy updates on developing immigration news, graphic-heavy explainers, short documentaries about impacted individuals and RAICES’ staff, celebrity advocacy montages, animations, field dispatches and live streaming, among others. On occasion, we may dig into longer-form and episodic work as well.

The Video Producer will be responsible for staying abreast of developments in immigration policy and maintaining close relationships with RAICES’ staff to identify important stories inline with these goals and propose them to the Director of Video, who oversees all video production from LA. The Video Producer will consider the best way to tell each story creatively and prioritize from approved stories to ensure timely delivery. They will lead production and reporting on Texas-based video stories from start to finish with our Associate Producer, including pre-production, field production & directing, reporting, scripting, and working with our editors in post-production.

We’re looking for someone organized and efficient who is motivated to help our team push boundaries creatively. The Video Producer must have a strong command of accurate, fact-based storytelling under deadline pressure and be able to fluidly switch between fast-paced breaking news and more considered production of elegant, creatively-crafted pieces. The Video Producer must have the flexibility to work both independently and to collaborate closely in an all-hands-on-deck team depending on demands. The Video Producer needs to weave RAICES’ voice and opinion throughout their stories.

Talent and enthusiasm to report on-camera to explain developing immigration news would be extremely valuable in this role. This reporting work could be live on locations as well as scripted. It would be a bonus if the Producer can do basic filming and editing, but isn’t necessary.

Above all, we want the Producer to bring RAICES’ passion and conviction in fighting for the rights of immigrants to their stories.

This position will be based in Austin but will require regular travel between RAICES’ various Texas offices (full list available at www.raicestexas.org) and other relevant locations, such as detention centers or further afield. That travel will often be planned but may also arise at short notice.

Responsibilities and attributes:

  • Lead a two-person Texas-based video team (Producer + Associate Producer) that creates a continual stream of responsive social media videos and features about issues related to RAICES’ work and mission.
  • Maintain close and constant communication with the Director of Video and the LA video team.
  • Stay abreast of potential stories, prioritize and pitch them internally
  • Produce all aspects of a video, seeing it through from start to finish (including release) working with the Associate Producer and editors.
  • Write engaging, intelligent, point-of-view driven scripts to ensure that our videos captivate audiences and elevate our stated mission.
  • Talent and enthusiasm to appear on-camera to present, report, and explain our perspective in a compelling, engaging way, sometimes urgently and under pressure. Occasionally this will involve live-streaming. Definitely in English and ideally in Spanish as well.
  • Prepare and stick to production budgets, with oversight and support from the Director of Video.
  • Ability to direct and support RAICES staff members and clients featured in videos.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity when working with vulnerable individuals who chose to share their stories on RAICES’ platforms.
  • Stay informed about trends in social video and digital storytelling.
  • Work with freelancers (DPs, outside producers, editors, etc), when necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required, in related field (e.g. communications, journalism, film production, marketing)
  • 5-10 years of experience in video production, journalism, and/or documentary filmmaking.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong point-of-view digital videos
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish speaking). Other languages are a plus.
  • Experience working in immigration and/or human rights is a plus
