RAICES is hiring a Controller to guide and direct the accounting operations. This full-time position will report to the Chief Financial Officer and is based in San Antonio.


RAICES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas. We actively advocate for these individuals and do whatever it takes to assist the immigrant community. With legal services, social programs, bond assistance, and an advocacy team focused on changing the narrative around immigration in this country, RAICES is operating on the national frontlines of the fight for immigration rights.


Job Description:

  • Directs and supervises staff in Accounting-related activities;
  • Drafts and updates accounting policy and procedures;
  • Process owner for Month-end closing, Financial Statement completion and Annual Operating Budget;
  • Liaison to external auditors and responsible for annual financial audit preparation;
  • Makes internal control recommendations and confirms compliance with GAAP;
  • Responsible for meeting time-sensitive compliance reporting deadlines for Grants;
  • Reviews Statement of Financial Position reconciliations;
  • Manages and updates Chart of Accounts;
  • Optimizes Financial Systems;
  • Oversees Payroll processing and reporting;
  • Implements and monitors cash controls;
  • Oversees monthly management reporting;
  • Staff development and performance evaluation in accounting areas;
  • Ad-hoc Projects & Reporting on request.

Key Performance Metrics:

  • Timely and accurate reporting;
  • Meeting all Grant financial input timelines;
  • Continuous improvement of Accounting Closing cycle;
  • Clean opinion for annual audit;
  • Development plans for staff in accounting areas.


  • Minimum of 7 years supervisory experience;
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (MBA or CPA preferred);
  • Not-for-profit experience- ( 501)(c)(4) experience a Plus;
  • Form 990 and Federal Indirect Rate experience;
  • Grant accounting experience;
  • Affinity for the mission and vision of RAICES.
