The Organization:

RAICES, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and education to underserved immigrant children, families and refugees in Texas seeks to hire a full-time legal assistant who assist attorneys to represent individuals pursuing benefits or seeking relief under the Immigration and Nationality Act. This position is located in Houston, TX.

The Position:

RAICES Houston is seeking a full-time Front Office/Administrative Assistant with a minimum of 1 year of clerical/administrative experience. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to work independently, organized, have the ability to multi-task, have a proficient knowledge of computers, great typing ability, and communicate well with others. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants must be fluent in Spanish and English. 

The duties include answering phones, managing attorneys' calendars, communicating with clients and government agencies, and assisting with family-based cases. It is a fast-paced environment. Prior immigration law experience preferred. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Greeting clients and visitors and answering visitor inquiries;
  • Answering and routing incoming calls on a multi-line telephone system;
  • Receiving and collecting payments from clients;
  • Organizing and maintaining payment daily reports;
  • Making bank deposits; 
  • Maintaining daily log of visitors;
  • Scheduling and routing clients;
  • Maintaining and organizing the waiting area, lobby or other public areas;
  • Ordering supplies and controlling inventory;
  • Scanning, photocopying, faxing and filing documents;
  • Collecting and routing mail and hand-delivered packages;
  • Verifying employee identification and issuing visitor passes.


Eligible applicants will satisfy each of the following criteria:

  • Fluency (written and verbal) in both the Spanish and English languages;
  • Demonstrated experience working with immigrant, low-income and/or vulnerable populations;
  • Capacity for working both independently and on team projects;
  • Ability to thrive in a high-paced work environment, while maintaining procedural and ethical integrity;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Proficient in use of technology including MS Office, Google Apps, and internet research;
  • Possession of Associate’s degree or comparable knowledge and work experience.
