Job Summary:

The Community Outreach Specialist is a full-time position reporting to the Managing Attorney of the RAICES Office of their placement. The Community Outreach Specialist works closely with Director of Education and Development, Director of Communications, and Director of Policy to develop advocacy and organizing priorities for the local community that advance RAICES organization-wide strategic goals. In close collaboration with the Managing Attorney and Program Directors, the Community Outreach Specialist leads RAICES outreach, education and local policy change activities for their local office.

Essential Functions:

  • Strategize with the RAICES local Managing Attorney, Communications Director, Policy Directors and leadership to develop local advocacy goals and priorities;
  • Lead portfolio of campaigns and advocacy goals for their local community in close collaboration with the Directors of other RAICES programs;
  • Provide regular and timely briefing and training to RAICES staff and community stakeholders on RAICES policy position and relevant strategies and developments;
  • With support from the Communications Director, provide support to RAICES’ staff and clients in media appearances and serve as a key spokesperson for local efforts in campaigns;
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize local media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed;
  • Serve as the lead point person on local media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the sector, as well as RAICES programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects;
  • Act as primary point of contact for RAICES organizing efforts locally;
  • Manage local campaigns and local base-building plan in coordination with leadership team;
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local elected officials in the city and county;
  • In close collaboration with the Volunteer Manager, recruit, build and maintain an ongoing base of community members engaged in advocacy and community organizing;
  • Work with RAICES attorneys on individual cases through community activism and community-based deportation defense;
  • Provide training and support to internal and external stakeholders to successfully implement local advocacy campaigns;
  • Facilitate meetings and events to respond to emerging community needs;
  • Work in formal and informal coalitions of legal aid and advocacy organizations to advocate for policy reform; draft and edit statements, reports, and other jointly-produced products;
  • Engage with organizations and organizers across issues and encourage collaboration across communities;
  • Work closely with Outreach and Media teams to develop local communications plans to reach our campaign and advocacy goals, including working across teams to manage rapid response strategic communications at key campaign moments, and work collaboratively with communications staff on long-term communications plans for our campaign and partnership work.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  1. Possess excellent writing and computer (Microsoft Office Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel) and database management skills.
  2. Highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes.
  3. Ability to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints.
  4. Strong attention to detail.
  5. Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work with confidential material.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work in team environment.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Minimum BA or BS degree.
  2. Bilingual in English and Spanish
  3. Demonstrated commitment to supporting immigrants and refugees in our community preferred.

Working Conditions

  1. Working conditions are normal for an office environment.
  2. Some evening and weekend hours as required.
